Symptoms

  • Presents as progressive renal disease14
  • Progressive renal insufficiency with proteinuria only in some, usually non-nephrotic14
  • Chronic renal insufficiency and bland urinary sediment17

Risk Factors

  • ALect2 is most prevalent in the Southwest (New Mexico, Arizona, far western Texas). 10
  • ALect2 presents on 2% of kidney biopsies from this region
  • 54% of amyloidosis cases in the SW were ALect2. 10
  • 88% of ALect2 patients in SW were Hispanic. 10
  • Presents in patients between 43 and 88, with a mean age of 67. 2,5,7,8,10,11,13,17,18
  • Other groups with higher incidences are First Nation Peoples in Canada, Punjabis, and Native Americans. 5,8,10,13,17
  • While the etiology of ALect2 is unknown and there is currently no effective treatment, it is important to avoid misdiagnosis. Applying ineffective treatment may be harmful. Regrettably, in one series 4 patients had received chemotherapy consequent to an erroneous diagnosis of AL.14
